Established in 2007, the state of North Carolina’s University Cancer Research Fund (UCRF) supports research projects and infrastructure at the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center, the state’s only public, NCI-Designated Comprehensive Cancer Center. The UCRF is funded through a combination of appropriations from the state general revenues and collections of taxes on non-cigarette tobacco products such as smokeless tobacco (snuff). Each year the UCRF provides $40-$50 million per year to support cancer research intended to defeat a disease that affects almost 40 percent of North Carolina residents.
